Dynamic Positioning is one of those maritime disciplines most people never know exists, even while some of the most complicated work at sea depends on it.
Wind, current and sea state are always trying to move the vessel. The DP system is always answering—comparing position and heading, reading its sensors, allocating thrust and making corrections to keep the ship where the operation needs it.
The operator still owns the other half of the problem: understand the environment, understand the machinery, understand what the system is telling you—and recognize when something does not make sense.
And when it is time to move the setpoint: chase the carrot.
