FOM 9 Designs is a veteran-owned nautical apparel brand founded in San Diego in 2023. Our work is inspired by the instruments, language, history, and hard-earned judgment behind maritime navigation.

WHERE IT BEGAN

FOM 9 grew from more than three decades spent in and around naval navigation: standing watch, crossing oceans, teaching the craft, supporting the systems, and learning how quickly certainty disappears at sea.

Founder Andrew Frischer served for 24 years in the United States Navy Submarine Force before continuing his work as a navigation instructor, operations certifier, and systems specialist supporting the Surface Fleet. FOM 9 began as a way to carry that world ashore through design while preserving the knowledge, character, and quiet competence behind it.

This is more than nautical inspiration. It is a career translated into something that can be worn.

THE NAME

FOM stands for Figure of Merit, a value used by navigation receivers to indicate the estimated quality of a position solution. On the traditional scale, FOM 1 represents the strongest solution and FOM 9 the poorest.

At FOM 9, the equipment is telling you that its answer should no longer be trusted without question. The navigator still has to understand the situation, verify the information, and know what to do next.

That idea sits at the center of the brand. Technology can assist the navigator, but it cannot replace judgment, preparation, or command of the craft.

WHAT WE MAKE

We create apparel and accessories rooted in the art, science, and history of navigation.

Charts, compass roses, fathometers, sextants, radar, bathymetry, dead reckoning, celestial navigation, and maritime language all find their way into the work. Some references are unmistakable. Others are details that only another navigator will recognize.

Every piece is designed to carry a genuine story while remaining wearable well beyond the waterfront. The result is nautical apparel with substance, restraint, and a little salt in its bloodstream.

Our mission is to keep the culture and knowledge of navigation alive through design.

We honor the people who practice the craft, the instruments that shaped it, and the oceans that made it necessary. We also believe those waters deserve care in return. As FOM 9 grows, so will our commitment to responsible production, ocean stewardship, and practical support for the preservation of the marine environment.

Great design should offer more than decoration. It should preserve a story, begin a conversation, and give people a reason to look more closely.
