Our Story
Navigation Is an Art. We Made It Fashion.
FOM 9 Designs began in San Diego in 2023, built from a life spent around ships, charts, navigation systems and the people responsible for knowing where the hell they are.
The clothing came later. The subject was already there.
WHERE IT BEGAN
FOM 9 grew from more than three decades in naval navigation—standing watch, crossing oceans, teaching the craft, testing and supporting navigation systems, and seeing firsthand how quickly certainty can disappear at sea.
Founder Andrew Frischer served 24 years in the United States Navy Submarine Force before continuing to work with the Surface Fleet as a navigation instructor, operations certifier and systems specialist. FOM 9 became a way to carry some of that world ashore without sanding off the parts that make it interesting.
The references are real because the work behind them is real.
THE NAME
FOM stands for Figure of Merit, a measure used by navigation equipment to describe confidence in a position solution. The scale that inspired the name runs toward FOM 9 as confidence in that solution degrades.
That is where the navigator matters most. An answer on a screen is still an answer that has to be understood, checked against the rest of the picture, and questioned when it does not make sense.
That idea sits at the center of FOM 9: use the technology, understand the craft, and keep enough judgment left over to know the difference.
WHAT WE MAKE
Our designs come from the art, science and history of navigation—Bowditch, celestial work, sextants, radar, bathymetry, dead reckoning, electronic navigation, bridge culture and the strange language mariners collect after enough time at sea.
Some references are obvious. Others are there for the person who has stood the watch, worked the problem or opened the book before.
We make the clothes to be worn well beyond the waterfront. The navigation stays in the design rather than turning the whole thing into costume.
WHY IT MATTERS
Navigation is old work that keeps changing. Instruments improve, systems become more capable, and the information arrives faster, but observation, preparation, skepticism and judgment still matter.
FOM 9 exists to keep some of that culture alive through design, to respect the people who practice the craft, and to stay curious about the oceans that made it necessary in the first place.
As the brand grows, so will our commitment to responsible production and practical support for ocean stewardship.
FOR THE NAVIGATORS
FOM 9 is for mariners, veterans, sailors, explorers, engineers, chart-room obsessives and anyone else who understands the pull of an uncertain course.
You do not need to have crossed an ocean to get it. Curiosity travels just fine ashore.
